Editor’s Note

Spring is here and it is a glorious time of year. I just love the weather in Brisbane at the moment…perfect days, especially if you can find a little spot of sunshine! What better way to get outside than enjoying time in the garden, just read page 24 get some great tips for when you are out there. Someone else who loves being in the garden is Bryce Courtenay, who recently caught up with Ben Sorensen for a chat. Bryce shares about being ‘saved’ from an orphanage in South Africa and his fear associated with growing old.

As spring is synonymous with starting anew, now is the perfect time to get into exercising, especially if you, like me, took to sleeping a little later during the cooler months in favour of pounding the pavement. Jacob shares a great tool for getting more out of your workout in half the time (pg 10). Also starting new this month is our featured local business, My Butcher Shop which has just opened on Racecourse Road.

September also brings the celebration of Father’s Day, so we have extended our @Home column to showcase some fabulous items men are sure to love. Not only are there great things to look at, but also to win! The girls have not been forgotten either in the giveaways…One lucky reader will win a gorgeous sterling silver pendant from luxury accessories designer, Djaafar El Ghazi (see Anna Beresford-Smith’s interview with him on page 14). Congratulations!

Recently, the Racecourse Road Business Group (RRBG) was recognised in the Lord Mayor’s 2010 Spotless Suburbs Awards - a competition aimed at encouraging local communities to take an interest in civic pride. The Racecourse Road Business Group impressed the judges with their commitment to getting local residents and businesses working together to promote the precinct.

I wish to congratulate the RRBG for their tremendous and ongoing efforts that have resulted in taking out the 2010 Partnerships Award category and encourage the local communities of HOME Magazine’s readership to follow their example.

Council is continuing to spend record dollars on keeping Brisbane tidy with close to $40 million set aside for more grass cuts, street sweeps, litter patrols and bins. I encourage local residents to inform me of any matters requiring Council maintenance or attention to achieve a better Brisbane.
